Thirteen!

Today Andrew officially became a teenager! Originally, we planned to have a birthday party today, then a cast party was announced. So his father and I planned alternate activities, since the birthday boy wouldn't be home anyway: home and visiting teaching! It's nearing the end of the month--so what else would we do on a Tuesday evening. Then the cast party was postponed :( So I moved my appointment and Andrew, Julie, Rob & I celebrated by seeing the latest Harry Potter at the dollar theater & eating cake and ice cream. More celebrations to come!

Thanks to everyone who remembered him!

Character Day at the Jr. High! Can you guess who Andrew was?

Hanging Out With Elena!

We've spent the afternoon at Primary Children's with Elena. Her mom and dad had a much-needed break and went to a BYU basketball game. As of this writing, Elena is unhooked from the IV and bouncing around the room. The biggest challenge is keeping her from falling off the bed in her enthusiasm. Although her ANC is very low and her hematacrit is low, the fever is gone and she seems well. I'm not the doctor, but I'm guessing she'll be headed for home soon.

Highlights of the afternoon were:
*watching her wave at another bald child outside her door
*listening to her sing "I am a Child of God"
*snuggling with her on her bed for two hours while we tried (unsuccessfully) to take a nap
*having her roll over spontaneously and say, "I love you, Grandma!"
*and a surprise visit and tea party from Belle and her prince!

Tender Mercies

I think Heavenly Father loves me. He knows that there is nothing that will make me happier than having all my family together. Wednesday night that happened. Saturday afternoon that happened. To put it in perspective, we haven't been all together since Julie's wedding--and that was also an incredible tender mercy.

Two days after everyone left for their homes, Elena woke up very sick, and was admitted to Primary Children's Hospital. Additionally, Eric & Briana were informed that she will be beginning a new protocol, which will mean more hospital stays and more isolation, for a while.

Is it a coincidence that Eric & Jenny and Danny & Kristi chose that weekend to surprise us? If they had waited one more week, it couldn't have happened. I choose to believe that it was, instead, evidence of a Father's love.

A Most Perfect Surprise!

Blessing Margaret Marie Strong was on the calendar.
Amy & Ryan's "half-way through winter" party was on the calendar.
Eric's graduation party was on the calendar.
Blessing Jackson Alan Hoffman wasn't--yet.
And neither was our surprise visit from Jenny, Eric, Parker, Caleb, Maren & Macey
or our surprise visit from Danny, Kristi & Jackson.
We were stunned and thrilled beyond words!
Thank you to the secret makers and secret keepers!

Is it in the genes?

It began with my dear husband. Putting it bluntly, I'm talking about the lies. Lies, done in good humor, it is true, but nevertheless, lies.

There was the time when I was a pregnant newlywed that he told me his bishop's wife had invited him to witness her labor and delivery. It wasn't until I cried that he confessed that he was lying. As our family grew, he insisted that he had been Highlander in his previous life. I think some of the kids actually believed him. And in more recent years, many of you will recall the traditional Conference "shake session" lies: he punched a protester, a temple was being built in Jackson County, Elder Holland and Elder Bednar were called to serve in Jerusalem . . . and on they go.

Of course, like father, like daughter, Jenny added her own list of little white lies: the time she told a date that Andrew was her son instead of her brother; the time she went on a double date, found out that the other young man in the group was a BYU art model, and told him she was an art major and he looked really familiar.

Then we might remember all the dating pictures . . . including, of course, the one of Amy & Eric, which they framed in a Prom 2002 frame, placed in Amy's apartment living room, and waited to see how long it would take the ward members to figure out that they weren't really dating. Of course there was the legendary cockroach in a shoulder story, and the time Amy told Ryan she was 17, when she was really 21.

I could go on, but I think I've made my point.

Which brings me to our most recent piece of deception. Our sweet little Andrew teamed up with the neighbor girl, Melissa Jensen. At first it seemed harmless enough--they decided to greet each other in the halls at the Jr. High as siblings. Of course, during the same time period that Andrew is telling people he's Melissa's brother, he's also telling everyone that he's Justin Beeber, so I'm not all that concerned. Who's going to believe him, right?

I'll tell you who. The journalism teacher. It seems that Andrew & Melissa showed up for sibling yearbook photos. So when Amy stopped at the Jr. High to pick up Ryan (who teaches there), she was introduced to the journalism teacher. "Are you a part of the Hoffman-Jensen family, then?" "Um, no. My parents aren't divorced. But wait, who's the Jensen?" "Tammy Jensen, who married a Hoffman." "She's our neighbor, but . . . " and bit by bit, the truth came out. They lied. And the picture won't go in the yearbook!

All I can say is, they didn't get it from me.

(Surprisingly, this character flaw didn't prevent Andrew from being nominated by his teachers to serve in a focus group to report on the school's effectiveness.)

Homophones Anyone?

Today I had a training meeting. During the meeting, one of the staff developers--which means she's most likely a former teacher with a Master's Degree in education, and just happens to be from someplace in the South--was discussing teaching the blend "wh" (why, what, when). She suggested we use the word "whistle" as a key, or anchor, word to help the kids learn the sound. This was different from the printed information we had been previously given, when it was suggested that we use the word "wheel."

"I don't know what I was thinking," she said. "Wheel is just like 'will.' They're homophones."

Yes, that's pretty much the way I learned it in third grade: to, too, two; hear, here; there, their; bare, bear; wheel, will. Yup.

WHEW!

Disclaimer: I did not choose the following picture. Andrew chose it.

HE MADE IT!!!
